  1. Very nice! You have four hens in there? And you’ll have the children move it daily?

One question is the wheel on the back (?) end. It seems more than un-strategically located to contact the ground in a position that won’t wreak havoc upon the residents… what gives? Did an engineer design that? :)

Also, you seem to have things propped up against all sides as if it were about to roll away…

My chicken tractor held about 50 or so, and the children used wheels and a hand truck to move it, but it was a bit unwieldy. I may scale it down next year after I ponder the design this winter.

  2. Yes, four hens. We move it about every other day.

The wheels are just stored at the position in which you see them. When it’s time to move them, the wheels are moved to two bolts toward the bottom. It works very nicely.

The materials on the sides are protection against predators. The sides aren’t coming into full contact with the ground, so we’ve been taking precautions against diggers (such as the dog!). My plan is to get some 4-by-4s or 2-by-4s, drill holes in them, set them by the sides after we move the coop, and pound spikes into the holes. That should at least deter the diggers.

We got the condo from coops4you.com, although the shipping was horrific.

This is something the chickens can winter in, though, as I also got plexiglas with holes for circulation to put on the exposed sides. Over the winter, I plan to build two fair-weather tractors and then get a run in the spring. By fall, they’ll all end up in our freezer. But the ones that we need to keep will get to stay in the condo.

  3. You guys did a great job with the chicken run!! That is very nice. Glad to see the babies alive and well. Or’seni is the only baby still here. I don’t see Amy’s mutant chicken. Has she been done in? Hope you guys are still enjoying then, thanks for letting me see them again. Cherri’O.
